Yoga and The Triathlete…Part 1

February 14, 2019

Valentines day is here…how about we show our body’s a little L-O-V-E?

A few years ago, as I was leaving Boot Camp, some friends invited me to take a yoga class with them.  I was currently teaching a BodyFlow class at the gym and knew how beneficial it was to keeping me flexible as a runner…so off I went.

And just like that, this triathlete fell in love.

Now, I fully admit that squeezing in yoga in addition to the swim-bike-run training is not always and easy feat. But if you can find a way to make it work, the benefits are well worth it.

Double workouts….getting faster, getting stronger, pushing our bodies further…eventually this can lead to imbalances in the body which can result in overuse injuries. Yoga goes past simple stretching. In addition to stability and balance, it simultaneously strengthens and lengthens every muscle in the body while working through all ranges of motions.

Truth be told, I could write PAGES on why triathletes need yoga….so let’s start with one stretch.

All that swimming and time spent in your aerobars isn’t doing your posture any favors!

Assisted bridge.  Use a block under the small of your back at the highest level where you can keep your feet and shoulders on the floor. Press your feet down and concentrate on rolling you shoulders under your body.

Have a pose you want help with or need an idea of how to stretch a specific mucsle? Let me know and maybe it will be the next pose I highlight!

To be continued…..
