3 days out and some time spent reflecting on Sunday’s Race.
I will have a full race report coming Thursday at 3 PM via a LIVE INSTAGRAM FEED, so be sure to get those questions ready!
Today is more about lessons learned from Sunday’s race…my B Race leading up to IMPL…and we are now 7 1/2 weeks out!
The list of things to learn is always lengthy, as nothing is ever perfect, but here are my TOP 5 TAKE AWAYS!
1. DON’T BE CONSUMED BY WHAT YOU CAN’T CONTROL. This can ruin your day before it even starts! So take a deep breath and just chill! The swim was delayed due to heavy fog before they decided to shorted it…and the seeding was less than ideal. I refused to start my day off on the wrong foot and just swam. No freaking out. No being consumed by being extremely excited or disappointed about a short swim. My job was to swim around the buoys once the race started.
2. BE READY FOR DELAYS. I swear, life has become a hurry up and wait game…and I hate it. When I’m ready to go, I’m ready to go. Well guess what…life doesn’t always go according to my type A schedule. Go ahead and leave for the venue early…parking will still be backed up. Get to the portapotty early….assume there will be a line and you are going to have to wait longer than anticipated. Go ahead and take off your goggles and swim cap when the start is delayed. It happens.
3. STAY AHEAD OF YOUR NUTRITION. I got a little behind on my nutrition and it could have ruined the run for me. I did lose a bottle on the bike course…and it was after the last water station. But to be honest…I took my last few sips of Tailwind just before leaving T2…and I wasn’t trying to conserve. I just wasn’t drinking enough.
4. BRING EXTRA FOOD FOR POST RACE. I tend to over pack, and am in the works of simplifying. So I didn’t bring anything for after…I just figured I’d eat at the Food Tent. One small problem…all they had was hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and coleslaw. Not particularly helpful for your Vegetarian Athletes. Referring back to Take Away 1….I could of had a roll and some salad…but I was pretty disappointed in the lack of offerings. I had to swing by my cousin’s because I had left my YETI there, and they only lived 6 minutes away. Thanks for the PB&J Amanda! Just to be safe always bring snacks!
5. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND RUN YOUR OWN RACE. I can get caught up in what is happening around me. Time to trust my training and do what I prepared to do. SWIM, BIKE, and RUN from Point A to Point B. That’s it. I did the hard work to get there…the race is just the victory lap and celebration.
Thursday 3 PM…get those questions ready! If you can’t tune in, send me your questions and I’ll be sure to answer it! The story will stay up on IG for 24 hours.
