MARATHON MADNESS

September 12, 2019

SEPTEMBER is HERE!

Along with it comes cooler temps, slightly shorter days, apple picking, pumpkin spice everything….and…

FALL MARATHONS!

Have you started to panic? Don’t worry! Here are a few tips from the Coach on how to make it to race day!

1. STICK TO YOUR PLAN. Don’t go overboard. No trying to cram extra training in. Get off your feet during your taper. It’s about unloading some of the stress you have put your body through while maintaining fitness. You won’t forget how to run…I promise!

2. PRINT YOUR ROUTE. Study, study, study! Where are your water stations? What fuel is offered on course or do you bring your own? Where are the major hills and landmarks? What is your walk/run ratio? What time do you need to be there? Who is going with you?

3. WEATHER. It changes. We know that. Have a couple of options for race day clothing. Layering is important when it starts cool and warms up.

4. PRERACE FOOD and CLOTHING. What will you eat race morning? Have you been practicing with this type of fuel on long run days? What time do you need to eat? I like to start a couple of hours before and graze for  90 minutes as I am getting myself together and to the start. But that’s me! I also take a field trip to my local Goodwill and get something warm and cozy to wear over my race outfit at the start that I can discard easily. Most races pick up all discarded clothing and donate it!

5. MENTAL GAME. You have prepared for this moment. That’s not to say it won’t be hard.  Matter of fact, around mile 18 or so you will probably wonder who’s idea it was to run a marathon anyway! Go back to your why. Write it on a piece of paper and put it in your pocket if you need to. Maybe you carry a picture of your kids or your mom.  Remind yourself that you GET TO DO THIS! And above all else, practice smiling for the race photographer! PRO TIP….they are usually on the uphill!

See you at the finish line! XXOO
