The days are getting shorter, the temps are dropping, and depending on where you live, it’s time to spend more time training indoors.
BUMMER!
Fall Race Season is slowly coming to an end and your swim-bike-run training is going to look different. After a few weeks to hit the reset button, physically AND mentally, it’s time to think about next year.
So the question is when should you start training for next season.
NOW. TODAY.
WHAT? YES!
Here is the deal. Say you want to do your first 70.3 next summer. That doesn’t mean you need to start running 10 milers ever weekend or in addition to 3 hour bike rides on the trainer. I’m sorry…I love to train but YUCK! Indoor off season training is the time for short frequent workouts. Drills. Strength work. Mobility.
It means getting clear idea of what you want accomplish next year. What races? Put them on a calendar. Then factor in family obligations. TRUTH….my race season gets planned around our summer vacation. It’s about fitting triathlon into your life…not the other way around! For my husband, visiting Mickey Mouse in the summer is a priority. He puts up with a lot when it comes to my training….which is a year round lifestyle…so I can show my appreciation by going to the Happiest Place on Earth and not bring training gear!
I got side tracked.
Start early. The stronger and more efficient you can become the more you are going to enjoy race day. We do this because we enjoy it, remember? No one wants to feel bad after a race. So write those goals down! Get specific. And then start to plan out what you need to do to accomplish those goals. More truth….I personally knew what races I was doing next year. Patriotman 70.3 seems so far away…until I got specific about what I wanted to accomplish that day. All of a sudden I was more than happy to go to the pool and do drills and get on my trainer.
Get help if you don’t know where to start. There are a ton of good resources out there. But get that race on the calendar (REGISTER!) and get to work! I’ll see you at the starting line!
