It had the potential to be a great run. The sun was out, the temperature was mild. I wasn’t rushed to get out or get back. The run was loosely structured. Warm-up for 10 minutes, 30 minutes Fartlek, 10 minutes to cool down. Easy Peasy.
I was even wearing my EAT MY DUST shirt.
And then it started.
Ugh. My legs. Why do they feel so heavy? Why does this feel so hard today? How am I going to pick up the pace…I don’t even want to hold endurance pace. Can’t I just take a walk break?
Sound familiar?
Here is the truth. Every run is not going to be your best run. Or bike. Or swim. Just like every run isn’t going to be your worst (thank God!).
The majority of your workouts should be uneventful. Just kind of plugging away and putting in the volume while practicing good form.
So when you have one of THOSE days…when you just feel kind of tired and the negative self-talk starts to show up…remind yourself it’s just one day out of many. Is it OK to walk? ALWAYS. Is it OK to just call it a day? SURE. It’s just one day…it’s not going to make or break you.
Instead of focusing on what’s not going right, look for what you can take from the session. For me, as someone who LOVES to train and has very few BAD workouts, it’s a gentle reminder that I can do hard things. So I push on. I whittle away at the issue until I gain some perspective. I look past the tired legs or the crummy attitude at what lies deep below the surface. It gives me a chance to practice digging deeper than I usually need to in my quest to find what I’m looking for.
Because I know it’s there…..in me and in you. We just need to be patient and keep digging.
